Abstract

A solution method for cochlear models is developed based on the a priori assumption that the length of the velocity wave on the basilar membrane is large with respect to the scala height. The method is applied to a two-dimensional model of the cochlea. The present technique leads to improvements of the two-dimensional long-wave solutions. In comparison with methods leading to exact solutions, the asymptotic approach is useful in spite of its limited validity, especially because it makes comprehensible the physical principles in the inner ear.
